The Formal Gardens
MONA has long been famous for her formal gardens. The gardens have been a work in progress since 1837. Mature Elms, Oaks, Cedars and Poplars provide strong and dramatic structure to the romantic garden plantings of Viburnum, Philadelphus, Crab Apple, and Lilac to name a few. MONA’s Gardens won the Belle/New Range Rover Garden Design of the Year in 2002 and has been featured in “Gardens of Eden. Amongst the world’s most beautiful gardens” published in 2009.

Probably the exit route for the horse and carriage in olden times, this straight and structural pathway is now probably too narrow for a horse and carriage. It does however, provide a delightful link between the Elm Wood and the Rhododendron Walk.

The finials and clipped box hedge on the upper lawn giveway to a dramatic backdrop of mature trees. In Summer these trees provide wonderful shade and in Winter good protection from the Westerly winds. Most of the trees are exotics and deciduous. This means that in the Winter months the northerly sun comes streaming onto the homestead verandah. The fallen leaves provide an endless supply of wonderful garden mulch.

The original road leading from Little River Road to the foot of the finials and steps leading to the Homestead. As coaches couldn't reverse (very far) this would have been a circular drive exiting along the Poplar walk. Surrounded by Elms, this is the coolest part of the property in Summer and has a quiet "film set" like atmosphere.

The lovely walled garden at MONA creates rooms and "secret gardens". Glimpses of other areas in the garden invite the stroller to explore and discover the many wonders in these beautiful gardens. Here, a Virginia Creeper in all its Autumn glory.

Once a 'Manger" for working horses, this circa 1857 building now houses a 7000 litre indoor heated plunge pool. The oldest building on the property and probably one of few remaining mangers in the district.

Autumn is a wonderful time of year in Braidwood. Crisp cool mornings and warm wind free sunny days. The glow of autumn colours are everywhere at MONA, with the ruby reds of the Viburnum Burkwoodii and smaller shrub and the yellow glow of the towering elms. These lovely little autumn crocuses add a splash of colour at ground level.
